We have launched our TV traineeship rad for the second year in a row with a 41% increase in applications.
The traineeship is a fully paid eight-month placement with a Scottish production company complemented with TRC training and support.
rad is specifically aimed at those who are under-represented in the TV industry: those either with a disability and/or from black, Asian or ethnic minority communities and/or from disadvantaged backgrounds.
We saw a 41% increase in applications since the previous edition of rad, with an increase of 59% BAME applicants, 58% from those with a disability and 71% from a disadvantaged background.
The trainees selected for rad 2021 are: Alex Chandler, Caroline Robinson, Ishani Krishnan, Iqbal Khokhar, Laura Thomson, Marc Harvey, Nathalie Ahmadzadeh, Ourania Henderson, Radeen Moncrieffe, Sophie Hopewell, Tiarna Armstrong and Zayn Ahmed.
The companies taking part are: BBC Studios, Hello Halo, Hopscotch Films, IWC Media, Raise the Roof, Red Sky, STV Studios, Tern TV, Two Rivers Media, Tinopolis (Firecracker/Mentorn) and BBC River City.
Jane Muirhead, Chair of TRC and Managing Director of Raise the Roof, commented:
“We’re delighted to see rad return for a second year running and we’ve been blown away by the standard of applications. We’re truly committed to diversifying our industry and making sure there are solid opportunities out there for new entrants to the Scottish screen industry. With so many amazing candidates, we can’t wait to see what they can bring to the industry.”
IWC Media’s Lynne Sabey also commented:
“IWC is delighted to be a part of rad again for 2021 after such a positive experience the first time around. The scheme provides an excellent launch pad for new talent and is vital to improving the diversity of the TV industry in Scotland.”
Former rad trainee Annie Butcher also commented;
"I couldn't have asked for a better opportunity than the rad traineeship, not only did it equip me with skills I now use everyday, but it gave me the confidence to navigate the freelance world. I'm excited to see the next rung of talented individuals go through this scheme and I wish them all the best on their journey!”
rad is funded by Screen Scotland, BBC Nations and Regions, Channel 4 and BBC Studios.
