Highlights of 2018

What a year it’s been!

In 2018 we bid goodbye to our teenage years and toasted 20 years of world-class training for TV and Digital. It’s been a busy one for us – from delivering our training and events, devising new programmes, giving ourselves a shiny makeover and putting Scotland on the map with our international trips. Once again, this year we were lucky to work with lots of brilliant creatives, who have made 2018 one to remember.

Here’s just a few of our highlights from the past twelve months…

TRC turns 20

This Summer we gathered together friends, colleagues and supporters of TRC to raise a glass to 20 years and look ahead to the next 20. We had a nostalgic look back at some of the best bits of the organisation’s history, and gathered them up in a snazzy publication, which you can read here. We also used our birthday to launch the TRC Network – a new way for TRC alumni to share knowledge and news, advice and experience. And we ate some cake. Always cake.

Championing Creative Diversity

2018 saw the sixth round of Special Edition – our professional development programme for women in digital. The six-month programme will wrap in 2019 with a trip to London and Amsterdam to meet a host of inspirational women working in digital.

Continuing in our celebration of creative women in business, in March we joined women and men around the world in celebrating International Women’s Day with our ‘Fail Up’ event. An emotional and inspiring evening, which you can read more about here. Keep your eyes peeled for 2019 plans…

Inclusivity in the TV Industry

Last month we launched a new training programme we’ve been excited about for quite some time. The television industry has a bad rep for being dominated by white, middle-class, able-bodied people and overall unrepresentative of the UK as a whole. We wanted to do our bit to change that.

Working with production companies, broadcasters, our funders and a range of partners we have devised and launched ‘rad’ – an inclusive approach to TV talent. Rad offers a 10-month traineeship in TV to people from groups usually underrepresented in the media. Applications for the programme have just closed and we have the very difficult job of shortlisting an incredible and diverse group of candidates. We’ll be kicking off the traineeship in early 2019, so watch this space!

New look

This year we decided it was time for a lick of paint and a general refresh. As well as launching a new brand, we also got a new website this year, making it easier to browse training options and apply for our courses. Thanks to the team at Pim Pam and Made by Crunch for their brilliant work. With a brand new look and website, we’re ready to jump headfirst into the challenges of 2019.

Creativity, Caffeine and Networking at TRC events

Over 300 of you attended our events this year! We welcomed London commissioners from Channel 4, BBC, Sky, ITV and UKTV to Glasgow, talked international opportunities for Scottish creatives and partnered with the likes of BIMA, Women Who Code, Whitespace and Codeclan. Interested in partnering with us? Keen to see a certain commissioner in Scotland? Get in touch with Michelle and we’ll get to work!

Going Global

2018 kicked off with a Cross Creative trip to Canada’s famous Toronto-Waterloo Region Corridor – a global centre of talent, growth, innovation and discovery. The Cross Creative group met some incredible people doing cool things at companies like Shopify, Thalmic Labs and Wattpad, bringing back great lessons and contacts to Scotland. In January the Special Edition group will be in Amsterdam and London for an equally inspiring trip!
Continuing with our international theme, in March we ran Look East: a intensive one-day workshop for digital and tech companies looking to expand their business into Asia. Find out more here.

Training

We couldn’t have a year in review post without mentioning some of the feedback from our training. We’ve linked regional TV producers with decision makers from top broadcasters through SuperSizer and built on negotiation, leadership and problem-solving skills with Special Edition and Cross Creative. The 2019 training diary is jam-packed already and we can’t wait!

Some lovely things people said about our training:

‘I think these sessions were one of those moments where I knew I was learning something that would change my life.’ –Special Edition delegate

‘You could nearly see the confidence and assertiveness levels rising during the day – I certainly left feeling better equipped to handle the trickiest of workplace scenarios!’ -SuperSizer delegate

‘It was great to take a step back and evaluate our creative process. I came out of the session inspired to move away from safe and obvious solutions and encourage more out of the box thinking to explore the landscape of possibilities.’ – Cross Creative delegate

And that’s it! Thanks to all who have been part of our year. We hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and a restful break. See you in 2019!
