SuperSizer – Case Study

I applied to Supersizer because I’d taken on a new role as Executive Producer at Ricochet’s Glasgow office, which had just opened the previous year. As well as overseeing two big series for Channel 4 and Discovery, part of my remit was to win business and help Ricochet Glasgow grow. The mix of professional development and face time with a large network of commissioners really appealed to me. As well as the ambition of the course which aligns with my own thinking – why shouldn’t indies in the Nations & Regions come up with the next big returnable hit?

It’s so difficult to narrow it down to one thing but my biggest takeaway was the strength of connection made with the other delegates on the course.  In a year which has been particularly challenging for the television industry, knowing I would be meeting up with wonderful, likeminded individuals on the course every other week, was very reassuring.  The safe space that was created meant we all felt we could trust each other with the challenges we were facing both individually and industry wide. That proved invaluable.

I’d always felt, because I worked with one foot in production and one foot in development, that I was somehow a bit of an outsider in development. The course helped shake off this imposter syndrome and instilled confidence in my ideas and my pitching ability. The Action Learning session provided me with a particularly strong light bulb moment which ended up having a positive impact on the course of my career and the opportunity to pitch one of my series ideas to Ben Frow at Channel 5 was a thrilling experience which resulted in traction for the company which is ongoing – watch this space.

Go into it with an open mind and throw yourself into the process in the knowledge you’ll come out the other end a better Development Exec with a greater understanding of yourself and new set of TV friends for life. Don’t let the opportunity pass you by!
