SuperSIzer – Case Study

Connie Sneddon

Connie Sneddon joined SuperSizer whilst working as a Development Producer at IWC Media.

What made you apply to SuperSizer?

I was encouraged to apply for the course by my team at IWC. I have always been keen to take every opportunity to learn what I can about development and the SuperSizer course offered something on every area wanted to know more about! So, it was a perfect choice for me. I was also eager to network and make new connections – both with the supersizers group and with those who ran each session – and I loved the fact the course was over such a long period of time, allowing that to happen.

What was your biggest takeaway?

My biggest takeaway was that I should be confident in my abilities as a producer. I had only just been promoted when applying for the course and I was worried I would be out of my depth – knowing some people on the course owned their own company! – but as soon as I met the group, I felt excited for what was to come. Starting off the course with Colin with us all together helped me remember I had skills to be confident in and not to be intimidated, which was a useful start for me.

Another big thing the course gave me was a reminder of why love my job! The course came at the perfect time for me. With it being such a tricky, pretty demotivating, time in the industry, having that support group, celebrating their successes, and most importantly hearing from them as well as some commissioners that they were all feeling it the same way, was very needed.

How did the SuperSizer programme help with your career?

The course helped with my career in many ways but making new connections within the industry was the biggest help. With many pitch meetings being held over Zoom, I have found it increasingly difficult to network and meet people in real life. Getting to meet all the SuperSizers in person on multiple occasions really allowed me to solidify new relationships with people at other companies and meeting with so many impressive people on each session was invaluable. However, meeting so many commissioners during our week in London is what helped both my career and company the most. Getting facetime with commissioners I want to pitch to in the future, seeing how they are in person and hearing what they were looking for was hugely helpful to both myself and IWC. We have made great use of the information I learned throughout the course, and I now personally have my own commissioner relationships which I did not have before.

What advice would you give someone applying for SuperSizer?

My advice would be to use your group! I felt nervous at the start to ask questions in the chat or ask for advice, now we go to each other for help with everything from brainstorming to finding crew. I would also always take the time to be fully prepped going into each session – even on days when I was up against it at work, going into each session knowing a bit about the person and their background allowed me to get the most out of it.
