We’re teaming up with BBC Digital Cities to chat all things Crowdfunding…

From building a loyal support community online to clinching the financial boost necessary to turn bright ideas into a reality, everyone from global technology giants to Wes Anderson has turned to Crowdfunding since the first successfully funded Kickstarter campaign in 2009.

Since then, crowdfunding has become an increasingly popular way for creatives to raise capital for projects they care about, supported by a worldwide community who share in their passion.

We’re delighted to welcome a panel of TRC alumni to speak about their experience of various means of online crowdfunding. We’ll hear from experts in the art of getting the word out about new products and securing that all-important cash in the bank, filmmakers who have used online platforms as a means of alternative financing and creatives using digital means for social good.

kayeKaye Symington- Paved with Gold (TRC Special Edition 2016)

Kaye is co-founder of Paved with Gold- a bright young marketing consultancy that helps people who make products get them into the hands of people who will love them. They work with creators to deliver inspiring campaigns, helping them to create brands and build loyal communities. Paved with Gold was recently given Kickstarter’s official seal of approval after being named one of the platform’s ‘Experts’.

From creating and growing the social presence for Doctor Who (BBC Worldwide) to building and growing successful start-up brands from scratch, Kaye is a multi-disciplined marketer who will share her crowdfunding expertise with us.  She’ll speak about the importance of community in crowdfunding, building compelling content around products and striking up creative partnerships to guarantee that your products are seen in all the right places.

 

rebeccaRebecca Thompson- Hot Tap Media, Social Screen (TRC Special Edition 2013)

Rebecca is an award-winning digital marketer specialising in digital audience development and crowdfunding. Since establishing Hot Tap Media in 2011, she has delivered audience development and crowdfunding campaign consultancy for a number of film projects including Not Another Happy Ending, Bodkin Ras, Fireworks and, most recently, Nothing to Declare. Last year Rebecca also launched Social Screen, a web platform for independent film-makers that allows you to build your audience, crowdfund your film and distribute your film, all from your own website. Rebecca works with makers of all kinds to help them integrate digital strategy into their work, and is passionate the role of the digital community in the creative industries for crowdfunding and beyond.

Rebecca will talk about how Social Screen can help film producers use crowdfunding as a tool for raising funds while fostering a meaningful relationship with the audience throughout the whole journey of the film.

 

Will Adams, Once Were Farmers (TRC International Programme 2010)

willWill is a triple BAFTA nominated director currently working on Nothing to Declare– a short CG animated horror in collaboration with Interference Pattern for the Scottish Film Talent Network, which is soon to be completed following a successful Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign.

In 2002 Will co-founded Once Were Farmers animation studio and has provided creative direction on a diverse range of projects including Architectural Visualisation, Music Videos, Multi-Media Theatre Performances, Commercials, Broadcast Graphics and Visual Effects. Since 2012 Once Were Farmers has focused on production and Will has recently directed his 6th Bitesize mini-series for BBC Learning – two of which have been nominated for BAFTAs.

In 2016 Will co-founded The Animation Centrifuge a not-for-profit company to promote excellence in animation and launched the Animation Base Camp – an 8-week industry-based training program – in association with Sony Pictures Animation.

Will shall be speaking about his latest project and using crowdfunding as a filmmaker.

 

Carol Cooke, Scrumptious Productions (TRC New Horizons 2015)

carolCarol Cooke is founder and director of Scrumptious productions- a BAFTA award-winning production company based in Glasgow specialising in social documentary, youth film-making masterclasses and compelling visual content for business.

Their current project, Barefoot in Business, is a ground-breaking documentary campaign showcasing the work of female entrepreneurs across Uganda and creating a new online marketplace where you can buy their products and help bring their big ambitions to life. Scrumptious believe that everyone has a story to tell and they work with individuals and organisations of all abilities and experiences to provide tailor made films and programmes to help share their stories with the world.

Carol will speak about using crowdfunding as a democratic way of supporting the fundraising needs of your community.
